Could your Fungal Nail Infection Pose a Serious Danger?

If you’ve ever suffered from a nail fungus infection (Onychomycosis) you know what a hassle it can be.  Nail fungus is embarrassing, unsightly, causes your nails to become thick and brittle and can even give off an unpleasant odor.  But did you know that in some cases, fungal nail infections can actually pose a serious threat?

Nail fungus, if left untreated can become a serious health risk and can lead to harmful infections as well as other illnesses.  Diabetics and people with weakened immune systems are especially at risk.

Below are some of the potential dangers of a nail fungus infection:

Mild Dangers of a Fungal Nail Infection

  1. Disrupts your daily routine – Those stylish, open-toe sandals are definitely going to be a no-no during a nail fungus infection.  Do you have the courage to display those yellow, brittle nails to the world at large?  You will probably also avoid the beach, the pool, or gym lockers.
  2. Affects your Self-Image – Studies have shown that almost 50% of people with nail fungus infections suffer from low self-esteem or low self-image.
  3. Can cause pain – Fungal nail infections can deform your nails which may cause them to start pushing against your skin, which can cause pain.

More Serious Risks of Nail Fungus

  1. Permanent Nail Damage – Left untreated a nail fungus infection can cause serious damage to your nail; in fact you might lose your nail for good!
  2. Cellulitis – A fungal nail infection makes you more susceptible to developing skin conditions including cellulitis.
  3. Bacterial Infection – A nail fungus infection which is not treated can spread to the surrounding skin and can cause a potentially serious bacterial infection.  This is especially the case for patients whose immune systems are weak as a result of other illnesses, e.g. diabetes, AIDS, etc.
