Beauty, some people say, is skin deep. Granted, but that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t take pride in how we look. A healthy and beautiful body goes hand in hand with beautiful skin. Your skin reflects your health and is your body’s canvas. It’s one of your body’s most valuable assets.
Your daily habits affect your skin’s health and its beauty so take charge and ensure you follow the seven simple tips for beautiful skin:
1. Drink lots of water
Keeping yourself hydrated by drinking lots of water will improve your health and bring back the glow to your skin. Our daily routines keep us so busy that we sometimes overlook this obvious fact. A minimum of 8 glasses of water a day will suffice and keeping a handy water bottle at your work desk will help ensure you don’t forget.
2. Understand your type of skin
There are different skin types which can range between oily, dry, normal, sensitive and combination skin. Understanding your skin type will help you use the correct treatments for your skin. One way to determine your skin type is to clean your face with tissue paper after waking up in the morning before washing your face. This will show if your skin is oily, dry or normal.
3. Wash your face twice a day
Wash your face twice a day with warm water, and if possible, every time you come from a place that had exposed you to pollutants. Gently massage your face with circular motions. Don’t scrub. Over washing and scrubbing can cause skin to become irritated. After cleansing, you can use a moisturizer that suits your skin type.
And ladies, always remove your make up and wash your face before you go to sleep. And never use old make up. Throw old make up away!
4. Use sunscreen daily
No matter what the season, always use sunscreen. Use generous amounts and reapply after washing your face. Use sun protection factor (SPF) 30 and greater with UVA and UVB protection. Make this a daily habit. Also avoid the sun between 10:00am and 3:00pm. Wearing clothing like long-sleeved shirts, pants and wide brimmed hats also provides good protection from the sun.
Caution: Don’t use tanning beds. The concept of a “safe tan” does not exist.
5. Exercise regularly
Daily exercise of 30 minutes gets your blood circulating and keeps you healthy which in turn reflect on your skin. Exercise is also a great stress buster and with the release of endorphins, you’re a happier person too!
6. Don’t keep touching your face!
Popping pimples and continuously touching your face will spread any bacteria or infected material which may further infect your pores, leading to more swelling and redness and even scarring. To keep bacteria at bay, wash your hands before applying anything to your face, such as treatment creams or makeup. If you notice a pimple developing, treat it with a good face wash or acne creams; don’t be tempted to fiddle with it!
7. Consult a dermatologist
If you’re concerned about acne, or other skin problems, consult a dermatologist before experimenting with various treatments. Your dermatologist can help you find the treatment method that’s best for your specific skin type and also give you lots of useful tips for caring for your skin.
Following the tips above – as simple and obvious as they may be – and making them a habit will help you to have healthier and more beautiful skin.
