Summer is upon us, and for some of us, our skin needs to beat the heat! Do enjoy your beach and swimming trips but also remember that it’s important to keep your skin soft, supple and well-nourished so that it looks and feels beautiful. Follow these simple tips to keep your skin looking great!
1. Protect your skin
The sun’s rays are strongest between 11am and 3pm. It’s best to stay indoors altogether at these times, but if you have to be out, then use a sun block lotion. Make sure this is applied at least 30 minutes before you expose yourself to the sun. Reapply every 1-2 hours if you are in the sun to ensure a summer full of safe sun fun. For Indian skin, use a broad spectrum sunscreen with both UVA and UVB protection and at least SPF 15. If on vacation or outdoors, usage of sunscreen with SPF 30 is highly recommended.
And throw away your previous year’s sunscreen, it isn’t meant to last forever you know. Get a new bottle!
2. Exfoliate your skin
You need to get rid of the skin cells that your body sheds every minute of every day. If you don’t, your skin may look dull and dry. Grab a body scrub and hit the shower. 2 – 3 times a week should be sufficient.
3. Stay hydrated
Drinking lots of water is essential every day, but more importantly during the summer when the heat causes dehydration. Drink a lots of water and liquids and your skin will stay soft and moisturised as well.
4. Use water-based moisturisers
Even though the summer may be hot and sticky, your skin needs moisturisers to keep it hydrated. If your skin feels very oily, use a water-based moisturiser for that light and fresh feeling.
5. Don’t have aerated drinks
The heat does tend to push you towards sodas and carbonated drinks to quench your thirst but all this does is spoil your skin (and figure), due to the large quantities of sugar. Why not try fresh juices – especially lime, or even coconut water – instead? It’s also best to minimise the intake of diuretics like alcohol and caffeine as they reduce the water from your system.
6. Don’t forget your feet!
Time to wear your sandals because the winter boots went away with the cold weather! Nothing is worse than seeing dull dry feet inside cute sandals. It doesn’t have to be a big ordeal. Keep a foot scrub and file in your shower and scrub your feet a few times a week. You’ll notice a big difference in the softness of your feet.
Many people suffer from skin infections or even fungal nail infections and are too embarrassed or conscious of their feet. If that be the case, this is the ideal time to make an appointment with a health professional!
